Fortnight Focus: Facilitating student engagement and achievement with interactive H5P videos: A case study on a Y2 EAP module

Pigou and Liang’s (2026) study investigates the use of interactive H5P videos in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course, and their relationship with student engagement and formative assessment performance. 

Conducted at a transnational Sino-British university in mainland China, the research is situated within a blended learning context in which H5P videos were embedded in Moodle to support a range of course activities. Using a mixed-methods approach, the authors combined quantitative data from Moodle analytics with qualitative data from semi-structured student interviews. 

Their findings suggest that the videos were associated with increased behavioural, cognitive, and affective engagement, as well as improved formative assessment outcomes. The study also highlights the value of interactive and gamified features, while noting that the benefits of the videos depended on their close alignment with course assessment and continued teacher support.
