This fortnight, following on from her presentation at the St Andrews conference, we’d like to recommend Milada Walková’s new article about the relationship between scholarship and expertise in EAP.
We think it is a fascinating read for fellow EAP teachers who want to explore what scholarship looks like in their own professional development, for example, to what extent they draw on practical experience and/or theoretical knowledge to develop their expertise.
Walkova introduces some useful models and frameworks to help us reflect on our approach to scholarship, inviting us to consider how both formal and tacit knowledge can shape our development. Formal knowledge is helpfully subdivided into 4 components to guide our reflection further: knowledge of context (our students); knowledge of general pedagogy; knowledge of EAP; and pedagogical content knowledge (when theoretical knowledge is applied to teaching practice and then disseminated through a formal scholarship output).
These frameworks also prompt us to consider what kinds of scholarship our institutions value and how we can personally contribute to the EAP knowledge base by going public with our scholarship.
